Hi Star - great lesson plan. I hadn’t thought about including the references as ‘Materials’ as you did; that would have proven helpful and I will remember that as I move forward with my personal project involving the lesson plan. I also thought the discussion was well formed and you asked relevant and thought provoking questions. I can see how breaking down each lesson plan can be valuable throughout the process of student learning - as we have in our course. Have you used this lesson plan in any of your courses previously? If not, you should consider doing so.
ReplyDeleteAs new technologies are integrated into the classroom, there has been research on how Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) can benefit the adult learner. Technological integration is usually associated with professional development programs, where the collaborative groups provide teachers with support and opportunities to analyze their learning practices. However, moving this into the classroom can sometimes be tricky. Instructors need to not only know their content, but also how to present it appropriately, where it will be an effective learning tool for students. TPACK is a “knowledge base needed by teachers to incorporate technology into their teaching” (Guzey & Roehrig, 2009, p. 28) and there are three main components of teach knowledge: content, pedagogy and technology. The basis of effective teaching with technology requires instructors to understand how to represent concepts that use technology. Pedagogical techniques that use technology in a constructive manner to teach the content also needs to be present, as well as the knowledge of the technology used to build on existing knowledge and create new learning. In your lesson plan, it looks like you have appropriately married all three concepts of the TPACK model.

Sara,
ReplyDeleteI have not used this lesson plan yet. It is one that I have had in mind for a long time, and the references I used are resources I have used in the past when I coached/mentored in other positions. I do hope to use it in my future!
I really enjoyed looking at using more of the full Wiki instead of just one the page that we are currently working on. So, I hope uses find it helpful in the future.
Ans, thanks for the reference to the TPACK model. I had not though much about the model usage, but after looking at it some more, I can see some of it.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Hi Star,
ReplyDeleteGreat lesson plans on mentoring and coaching adults teaching in early childhood. These lesson plans are very well-written, detailed, and organized. I think they are ready to use when that time comes. These lesson plans have been designed in a manner that another person could step in and teach these lessons if necessary. Each lesson was developed for the learner to complete the weekly wiki assignments. Nice work!
Colleen
Thanks Colleen! That was one hope I had, was not only easy for me to present, but that anyone that worked in my agency could step in and teach if needed.
DeleteYou entire wiki was focused on the relationship between the mentor or coach and the participant. So often we focus on what the teacher or mentor is supposed to be doing, the curriculum being used, and how the participant should respond. I appreciate that you have focused on the relationship. According to Pratt, Smulders, and associates “Although they [individuals] vary from culture to culture and across historical periods, it is usually clear to the members of a group how their roles, responsibilities, and relationships define appropriate ways of interacting” (2016, p. 226). In an online community, to “define appropriate ways of interacting” is a little more difficult because of the varied technology abilities of the users. Experientially speaking, native technology users can more easily develop online relationships than non-natives. My son Bryce says, “Some of my best friends are online. I’ve never seen them in person, but they are the people I turn to when I’ve had a bad day in [high] school” (personal communication, January 17, 2017). So this leaves me to ponder, in 15-20 years, when almost everyone using the internet is considered a digital native, will we again be able to use the statement from Pratt, Smulders, and associates (2016) with more fidelity?

Relationships and communication is the key to make any mentoring or coaching relationship work and be successful. I think this is something that I strive to do the most with all my work is building that much needed relationships first. Thanks for the feedback!
